Dearest all,
well I didn't really announce it but the reason why I've been pretty silent here is that I've been in Norway for a few days, and now, after hours of travel on buses, boats, trains, flying carpets etc. I can safely say that *I'm back!!!*
I hope everyone has been keeping well. To be honest I'm still kinda sailing on cloud nine from the trip: in a nutshell, Norway is fucking awesome!!! more than I ever could have imagined. I've always had a bit of a thing for scandinavia but had no real idea why: now I do. It's all about the feral quality of nature, the home grown people and the general liberation of mind and soul.
We started off in oslo, which for a capital city is incredibly small. During the day it's so quiet- i mean there are hardly any cars in the centre of town and it feels pretty ghostly- but also very serene. At night tho, all hell breaks loose and every norwegian worm comes blasting out of the woodwork
they're crazy people! and party til 4 or until they drop...
We then took the 6 hour train to bergen which is situated on the western coast. This train ride is apparently one of the top 20 in the world and I wasn't disappointed. The fjords reminded me of the andes in their monumentality and there was a stretch in the middle of the journey which was reminiscient of a moonscape but had orange foliage and deep teal-coloured glassy waters.
I wasnt sure what to expect from bergen but I can honestly say that the place is one of my favourite destinations in a long while. Bordered on all sides by mountains and hemmed in by the coast, this city is half the size of bergen and used to be the nation's capital. However small it may be, this place has a rocking vibe and energy that oslo would be hard pushed to match. Always buzzing with boats on the harbour, I think i really could live here...hmm, tho it does get a bit quiet...
We took [several] ferries from bergen to visit a rather fine glacier a fair distance inland. The trip took like 7 hours!! but the fjords were just fantastic. Being off peak season we were only a few of a handful of people visiting the area and it rained constantly, but surprisingly none of our spirits were dampened. The crests of the fjords were shrouded in mist and mystery and it felt like the northern lights would rain down and bless us at any second...
But they didnt and the reality was that Norway is heinously priced: 14 for a roll of film and 1.50 for a chocolate bar?! but I don't care: I have never come across people who are genuinely so friendly [and i'm one suspicious madam] and meatballs so damn good!! they also had a delicacy of dried cod which i tried and tasted like cod [funny that?!] but with the texture of red meat which was also pretty fine.
I was sad to leave today, especially as I did not have enough time to visit any art galleries. However, the edvard munch museum is still closed after the fuckers took two of the most stunning works that the guy ever did, but rest assured, I shall be back!!
Phew, thanks everyone who had the stamina to read down this far- I promise this is it about norway!! on thursday I bomb it down to bristol to bump into the new freshers
which will wind me up no end because i remember being a fresher and hating myself for being one and all of the others for being them too, but it will be great to catch up with all of my friends again and get my brain whirring back into action.
It's going to be different this year in every way. No more crap, this is my year.
Why? because a bird shat on me today and told me so.
love,
milkxxxxxx

i've developed a cold over the weekend
so tired... and trying desperately to recuperate to go back to Belfast tomorrow. blech.
Good to talk to you on Friday, despite my nasty hangover!
take care, helly, will email you through the week. (i've also discovered an internet cafe type thing in the middle of a shopping mall--- 1 for half an hour. Might give that a go for my SG addiction
