Have you ever had a secret admirer or been someone's secret admirer?
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this topic was something that happened in 2011 that I will never ever forget, it was the only memorable thing about Year 11 camp. It wasn't exactly a love letter or a secret admirer (I feel) but someone just spreading a little bit of kindness that I needed. Anyone who knows me will know I had an absolutely horrible time during school, people were never nice to me and I was a loser from the start just for being me. During year 10/11 I went through the worst of my bullying. This is why this memory has always stuck with me.
We were at camp and at first split off into groups of 6. We made an envelope with our name on it and decorated it whichever way we pleased. Then we were given 5 pieces of paper, with those we were asked to write something positive to each person on the table. We later gathered in a hall with the whole year group and did the same thing, this time we had the choice to send as many or as little as we liked and whether to be anonymous or not. Safe to say, I got next to nothing compared to everyone else. At first I felt a little defeated which made this discovery so much sweeter. I looked into my envelope and found one crumpled note which read, "Michaela, you light up this world. Don't ask why, you just do."
Of course, it was anonymous and the handwriting was unrecognisable to me. I've rattled my brain trying to figure out who this could be and to this day I still don't know. What I do know is what that little note gave me, and that was a sense of value. Whether I could see it or not, there is someone out there that thinks I'm special and that I matter.
I wish I could know who it was so I could really thank them for making my world brighter when I felt like I was lost in darkness. Always be kind SG Land, even the smallest gestures can mean the world to someone.
