So, this is it...
In about 10 days, my subscription will expire, and I have decided NOT to renew it.
SG has been a part of my life for almost 5 years now. I log in almost every day, and I've seen my good share of changes during all this time. Some have been great, and I've been happy to see this community grow... but there has also been a slow change that at the beginning I didn't want to acknowledge, but I can't deny anymore.
SG, IN MY OPINION, is no longer the house of alternative models, as it once were. It has slowly, yet unstoppably, been conquered by PERFECT girls. Stunning, flawless women with perfect bodies, evident boob jobs and sweet, coquettish smiles. Girls whose only difference with a playmate is the presence of tattoos (some quite badass, I'll give you that!). Girls that could be in ANY of the thousands of soft porn, nude models sites all over the internet.
And that's what makes me sad and mad. These girls have all the Internet for them, yet they ended up here, occupying the sanctuary that real girls had once created for them not having to compete againt the impossible standards of beauty of our culture. What ever happened to the "What some people think makes us strange, or weird, or fucked up, we think is what makes us beautiful" motto?! It has become: "What members think is beautiful, or perfect, or mainstream, will give us SG status; else, we will be forever hopefuls".
Of course, there are still a lot of strong, confident women that have not the perfect body measures. But, if they want to become full SGs, they will eventually have to abide by the mainstream rules: they will paint their hair a nice pastel tone, will put a perfect make up on their faces, cover their stretch marks, photoshop their cellulite away, and maybe even start to save for a boob job. The saddest part is, they will have to dim the light in their eyes, and substitute it with a nice-girl smile. Too-whatever girls (too badass, too fat, too skinny, too punk, too rebel, too nonabiding...) will rarely get more than a thousand hearts.
SG has become a victim of its own success... in the end, mainstream is an all-devouring creature.
Thank you, SG, for all what you have given me in all these years. I take with me the warmth of this community, and the possibility to look beyond the standards of beauty our culture had installed in my mind. Thanks to all of you, I can now see more clearly the beauty in EVERY woman. I really hope you continue changing lives. Mine did change.
