Blog hw 4/1: random facts about my home Anchorage, Alaska💚

Hey loves, it seems while I was away I missed this stellar blog topic! Born and raised in Anchorage, Ak I LOVE sharing fun facts about my home.

1) Anchorage became a city in 1915 when 2k workers flooded the area to begin work on the Alaska Railroad and built a tent city.

2) 44% of the state population lives in Anchorage, making it our largest city with nearly 400,000ppl in 2010 census. The state still has yet to hit 1million residents☺️

3) Anchorage didn't open its first hospital Providence until 1939, a small 2 story clinic downtown.

In 1962 it was moved and rebuilt to suit the growing size of the city. In 1989 I was born here in Providence Hospital😅

4) Anyone live in a sprawling Metropolis?! This will crack you up. Anchorage is home to Alaska's tallest building. The ConocoPhillips building is a whopping 22 stories high and is a landmark in my city✨

5) True Anchorage is the northernmost US city with +100,000 population however, it isn't as cold as you would think. We have maritime weather (close to the ocean) so winter temps stay about 20 degrees F which is perfect for winter sports!

6) We LOVE coffee☕️Anchorage is home to the most espresso stands per capita in the US.

7) North America's strongest recorded earthquake ever was recorded in Anchorage in 1964 on Good Friday. It was a 9.2 on the Richter scale and killed 115ppl. I wasn't here for that obviously haha. The worst neighborhood hit was never rebuilt and instead turned into Earthquake Park where much of the ground cracks are still visible👀

8) In summer months Anchorage gets about 20hrs of daylight. The sun doesn't begin to set until close to midnight and it rises again just before 4am.

I took these 2 off my porches just before midnight last summer, 2 separate days.

This one is me watching an 11:30pm sunset from the peak of Flattop a nearby mountain.

9) Winter months are very dark. We receive 10 tops hours of daylight but truly only see about 5hrs of light blue sky from 10am-3:30pm. Any Alaskan will tell you NO we are not vampires and the darkness has little effect on everyday living.

10) Despite what seems cold and dark, you will always find a willing participant to eat ice cream with you🍦Alaskans consume the most ice cream per capita in the US at 47.1 gallons per person😂👍🏾

Hope you guys enjoyed some random fun facts about this beautiful city I call home. Thanks for the topic ladies!!

Thanks for the good information :) It sounds like finland, because we have also bright nights during the summer. In end of the june, midsummer, sun won't go down at all. And winters here are dark times. Climate changes cause that we have had some black winters here in the south... No snow or very short period only. Last winter was better :)

Somehow I missed this blog. Since I have a BS in Geology, I was fully aware of the earthquake even though I was only 1 when it happened. And I knew that days are short in winter and long in summer, but I didn't know about all of the other things you wrote about. Fascinating! Anchorage is now on my Must Travel To list! Loved the blog, @midnightsun!
