Some months back, I visited the apartment of two friends I met from work. One a coworker, Mary, the other her girlfriend, Carrie.
I had only one friend in this city for the two years I'd been living here, that being my bandmate and close friend of eight years, Pete. I was unadjusted to the whole "socializing" thing and had forgotten what it meant for the most part. My old job as head chef in a Eurotrashy yuppie restaraunt had eaten my patience for humanity and all I did was stay home and work on music with what precious downtime I had. You could say this has been my way of life for at least a good six years.
However, it was my second month at my new job at a sex shop, where I happily remain at present. I was making friends and meeting many people with similarly obscure and bizarre tastes as mine. Mary and I had befriended on a mutual taste for Diamanda Galas.
I arrived at their apatment bearing the gift of a Fad Gadget mix CD I promised to burn for Mary. I was greeted by Mary with her kitty, Minu saying hello in catspeak behind her. Carrie was in the kitchen, I shook hands and introduced myself. I sat down at the couch. Lit a cigarette and made myself comfortable. For such a small efficiency occupied by two humans and one cat, it was clean and homey.
Another friend from work, a girl named Mariko arrived and we all smoked down. I was hallucinatorily baked after thee hits from a blunt and was in for a real mind-blower of a gift.
Carrie had a DVD of surrealist clay animations by an obscure Czech genius named Jan Svankmajer. I was moved to tears by this guy's work. Total brilliance that put even Dali to shame. I visited a dedication site today... here's the url: http://www.illumin.co.uk/svank/
Find whatever you can by this artist. Hell... he's more like a magician than an artist.
I later went on to collaborate with Mary and Carrie on a downtempo/industrial hybrid called the Whitechips. They have recently begun their move to North Carolina and our collaboration witll have to continue via internet filesharing. I will remember that first time hanging out with them as a signifier I needed to be doing more with my gift of creativity. More collaborating, more communicating, and more exploring.
