After I made breakfast burritos for us, Cat gave me a ride home before she went to work. It’s a beautiful morning! The Lions play the Cowboys and hopefully pull out another victory. It’s getting cold in Colorado, Cat loves it, I’m not a fan, I wish I was in San Diego already.
Only one review today. The new Revocation record The Outer Ones is some serious fire. The death inflected thrash jazz that is Revocation has gotten better with every release. My friend Chris once referred to them as angry jazz. This is my favorite track so far
todays subject is The Band. For those of you that don’t know about The Band. A little history, starting out as Ronnie Hawkins backing band in the early sixties, then Bob Dylan’s backing band for a couple Dylan records. Then they separated from Dylan to do their own thing, which is awesome because they definitely needed to. Featuring Levon Helm on drums and vocals, Robbie Robertson on guitar and backing vocals, multi instrumentalist Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel on Piano and lead vocals, Rick Danko on bass and vocals. Their first record music from the Big Pink. Started off a storied music career. This song was on a few greatest lists that have been thrown out there. It was also in the movie Easy Rider.

the next record would get them much more critical acclaim. The eponymous second album. Which has my favorite song that they have done. Levon Helm’s soulful drawl makes this song about the civil war that much more powerful.
this next track has a proto funk vibe to it. One of my favorite Levon Helm drum beats as it’s both loose and tight. Plus this story of a ride or die chick is always a good
The next release Stage Fright started of the seventies for The Band. Featuring an amazing vocal performance from Richard Manuel this song is my moms favorite.
this next track also features a very inspired vocal performance. This time by Rick Danko.
The next couple records were okay but not great, drugs and fame had started to take its toll on the members. Robbie Robertson also started to become an asshole. I will be skipping these records because they just aren’t good. the next record was the second to last before they broke up in 1978. Northern Lights-Southern Cross. Sees The Band to form. This next track was played by my sister Elliana incessantly for about a year. I love the horn section in this song.
the next song which is a northern version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. About a Canadian conflict in the Nova Scotia area. I love the accordion playing by Garth Hudson, who also plays the Piccolo on this song.
this last tune was on their last record before they called it quits and played their final show that Martin Scorsese filmed for the movie The Last Waltz.
after a five year breakup The Band had a reunion show that did not go well. In 1983. After the show Richard Manuel committed suicide, the next to go was Rick Danko who passed away in late 1999 from heart problems. Then in 2012 Levon Helm passed away from throat cancer. Leaving Robertson and Hudson the sole surviving members. Mainly staying in the studio Garth Hudson played on a Neko Case record that I enjoy.
My favorite part of the show and yours. Today’s selection is a lovely lady from Milan, Italy. She is a singer in a band, that is pretty cool. Although I’ve only heard the one song. She has an Lumpy Space Princess tattoo on her shin. I present to you the gorgeous @brisen
