Hello Gorgeous Babes! Hope everything is wonderful where you are! If not I hope it gets better. I am enjoying a mellow Sunday after cleaning my apartment. I had a serious battle with indecision for this weeks bum so it’s a two-fer.
First up the reviews. Holy smokes am I excited about these two records. First off the Devotchka record This Night Falls Forever. Is one of their best in my opinion. I’ve been a fan since the beginning when I saw them play at the Meadowlark in 06’ I also at one point lived in the same apartment building as Shawn King the percussionist and trumpet player, who is a pretty cool guy. They got their start as Dita Von Teese’s first backing band and it’s been success ever since. I’ve seen the show a few times at the local cabarets in Denver, The first time was at the clock tower in downtown. Then they had scored the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. Anyhow this song is one of my favorites.
Up next the new Alice In Chains. Holy smokes is this some fire! The new record Rainier Fog is definitely one of their best. Say what you will about singer/guitarist William Duvall not being Layne Staley and that the band is worse with him. You are wrong, everyone loves the classic lineup I get it, when he first joined I was like this fucking guy are you for real, my attitude changed quickly when I saw them Open up a show with the Deftones, and Mastodon at Red Rocks in 2009. The songwriting vastly improved his guitar playing gives the bands sound some muscle and his vocals are Staley-esque without being to over the top. This track has been my favorite so far off the new record.
Well it’s time for today’s subject and that is Southern Hip-Hop. I’ve always been a fan of pissing off my mom to get laughs for me and my dad(R.I.P) nothing pissed her off more than rap music. In my early teenage years I discovered Public Enemy, N.W.A., The Geto Boys, and UGK. It was UGK who opened up a new and different sound and style of rap music. Two friends from Port Arthur, Texas a city outside of Houston. Pimp C and Bun B had rhyme skills and beat making abilities. As Pimp C crafted a majority of the tracks. Their smooth deliveries and tales of the Texas ghettos were enthralling to me. My introduction occurred when at the local record store Wax-Trax in Capitol Hill. I was looking for an Ultramagnetic MC’s record and happened upon their debut album Too Hard To Swallow. The opening track featuring a Rufus and an Isley Brothers sample caught my attention that track was
the next song that stood out for me was a tale of a hustler in the ghetto just trying to find his way out by doing the only thing he knows how
I could go on all day about UGK maybe that’s a blog for later. They opened up a door that I gladly went through. The next record I purchased was The Geto Boys also from Houston. Featuring rappers Willie D, Scarface, and Bushwick Bill. That album was We Can’t Be Stopped. The cover art says it all, I would later find out that it was a real picture and not fake at all. This Song is a classic in the southern hip-hop catalog.
having a pretty solid foundation to start with I ventured out into groups from all over the south and other Texas rappers. The next record I would purchase was one that still gets regular play in my rotation and that is OutKast’s debut record Southernplayisticadillacmuzik featuring rappers Big Boi and Andre 3000, with production from Organized Noize. This record cemented my love for southern hip-hop.
Another one of my favorite tracks from this record has a seriously delicious beat drop from the geniuses in the Organized Noize crew.
The next rapper I would discover through an old college friend from my freshman year at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. That rapper was Master-P. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana. Founder of No Limit Records and father of Romeo. His favorite record was The Ice Cream Man. This was the song he was always playing.
And featuring UGK on this track what. It had UGK on it so I liked it no matter what. Although I would never really be a fan of Master-P he did some cool stuff with Tru before Silk The Shocker ended up in prison.
In the Early 2000’s southern hip-hop was finally getting recognition and one group that caught my ear was Three 6 Mafia. The record was When The Smoke Clears. The song featuring what these guys again UGK. Was a banger and has been in my rotation ever since its release.
I went and bought every Hypnotize minds release all the different versions of the group Triple 6 Mafia, Tear Da Club Up Thugs, Hypnotize Camp Posse, rappers Juicy J, DJ Paul, Koopsta Knicca, Lord Infamous, Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo and production from DJ Paul and Playa Fly. The album before it is definitely one of my favorites, this song is some fire off of CrazyNDaLazDayz
this next artist would be one I can say that I have listened to his whole career and liked most of his records. This would be Ludacris and his debut album also came out in 2000 as well you’ve probably heard this banger or banged to it, I know I have.
And he did a song with you guessed it UGK. Because in the south you give respect to those before you. Everything they were on was fire just ask Jay-Z who had them on one of his songs.
So many more southern rappers and artists would achieve success in the early 2000’s to present day which leaves at my last stop my final closing videos. One is by Young Jeezy now in his fourties he just goes by Jeezy. This is off his debut that came out in 2005.
This next rapper is fucking goofball his crazy ass rhymes and the over use of auto-tuned vocals. Which sometimes gets annoying, his prolific mix tape output, he put on Drake(meh) and Nicki Minaj(hell no) his name is Lil Wayne. This is my closet and it’s a dope track can you guess who’s on it
you thought it was going to be UGK. Thanks for joining me in my southern hip-hop journey. Now as promised the two-fer
I don’t know much about these two women other than the fact that they are both incredibly gorgeous. The first one is a goddess who I wouldn’t mind playing Darksiders two with the game featured in her set. @simalia
This next one has the most enchanting blue eyes I have ever seen and she is good looking with her clothes on. @pialora what is thy biding my mistress? if she was a dom I would be her sub. I don’t say that about many women so that’s a compliment if she reads this which may or may not happen.
Thanks as always for your support. Any questions, suggestions for new music, perhaps you would like me to feature your bum. Let me know in the comments below
