Juliana was kind enough to write a testimonial about me. I swear I didn't pay her (or even ask her) but it got me to thinking about my favorite word origin.
Testify: the root of testimonial, testimony, testament et al.
You know how when you testify in court you put your left hand on the bible and raise your right hand, and swear to tell the truth.
Well they did the same thing back in ancient Rome. except that was before there were bibles. Since only men would ever testify in a Roman court, they would raise their right hand and with their left hand they would hold their balls.
Swearing by their testicals that they were telling the truth.
That is the origin of the word testify, et al
And frankly, if I'm lying, you can take my bible.
And speaking of bibles, that also means that when you are reading the New Testament, you are literally reading "The New I Swear-By-My-Balls Story"
