I have never claimed to be wise or someone that anyone should come to for advice, and the advice I'm imparting doesn't even originate from me, it was one of the last things my father ever told me.
You can't control other peoples reactions. You can only control how you react to them. So be mindful of your reactions. Use reason when it feels that your emotions will overwhelm you. React to outrage with logic, and know that just because you feel passionately about an issue that there aren't other equally valid viewpoints, don't let your passion blind you.
That's it really. Reason and logic in the face of passion. It works pretty well for me when I remember it.
