Django Unchained
Let me begin by saying that this is a Quentin Tarantino film so there are some things that you should expect right from the start. Course language, extreme over the top violence, nudity, clever dialogue, and an amazing soundtrack. Well this movie delivered on all those items and so much more. One final warning before I get to the review, if you are easily upset by racial slurs, avoid this movie, or find a way to deal with it.

Tarantino was so racially insensitive in this movie, that it was probably intentional, and perhaps for that reason it WORKED. It wasnt just the dreaded N word, he played on every Deep South white stereotype there was. This wasnt just a case of levelling the playing field; in fact Id say it was perfect satire of the entire period which was perhaps the deeper point being made in the movie.

The main premise of the film is Django, a slave who knows the identities of three criminals that a bounty hunter is chasing down; he frees Django in exchange for his assistance in collecting these bounties. Things get complicated when they go about rescuing Djangos wife Broomhilda from a slave owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The spaces in between are filled with the clever dialogue, bloody violence and twists and turns and some amazing acting. Jaime Foxx is stellar; he is not the same actor we all remember from In Living Colour. He is as good as he was in Ray and Collateral from 2004 when he was really recognised as a dramatic actor. Christopher Waltz was humorous and refined at the same time, and Leonardo DiCaprio plays such an over the top villain that I am certain that there will be some Oscar buzz for him in a supporting role, and hopefully some for Jamie Foxx for leading role.

One thing I have always loved, and hated about Tarantino films is just how over the top he can be with his violence, again there is no shortage of absolutely outrageous violence here. From the opening scene to the classic Tarantino endings there is no shortage of blood, and cringe worthy violence and torture. That isnt to say there isnt a great deal of humour as well. The banter between Foxx and Waltz will make you laugh out loud, as will some of the other off the wall characters and moments.

When its all said and done, it was a completely enjoyable almost three hours in the theatre. It certainly was worthy of its Golden Globe nominations and the price of admission. A solid 5/5 for Tarantino fans and probably 4.5/5 for everyone else. I truly couldnt find any fault in this at all.
