My grandmother died today.
Around 9:30 am we gathered by her bed in the hospital and my mom and aunts and uncles sang some hymns for her, ones she enjoyed. Then they took her off of the respirator. She kept breathing on her own until about 3, when she stopped, and we all said our final goodbyes to her. She has an amazing family, which I stupidly forget about sometimes. My grandpa is an amazing man, if quiet. He loved her so incredibly much. It was heartbreaking and sad and amazing to watch him sit with her and touch her and cry and laugh and brush her hair from her face, and kiss her softly. They were married sixty-one years. I cannot imagine him without her, yet I know she would want him to keep doing his barbershop quartet, his gardening at the church, his photography club, his volunteering with Kiwanis (like I said, he's an amazing guy - very VERY middle-america). I just hope he can.
