When i saw this topic come up I began to think of what constitutes a "good horror movie".

It would be far to easy to pick a slasher movie such as Friday the 13th (1980), Halloween (1978), or Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). While all of these are great in their own right, i find them to be quite formulaic so you can always see what's coming.

I then considered whether a good horror movie incorporates humour. Movies such as The Evil Dead series (1981-1992), Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009), or Idle Hands (1999). Now i do love the humour and the generally sarcastic tone of these films but these films tend to be funnier than they are scary.

So again i went back to the well and noticed that what makes a good horror movie is the Villain. Films like Dracula (1992), The Wolf Man (1941), or Nosferatu (1922). These stories focused on the "Villain" and how the humans reacted/interacted with them.

I soon came to realize that it is not a single one of these characteristics that makes a good horror movie, but a balance of all three. With this in mind, my favourite horror movie is...

Trick r Treat

This film takes the traditional conventions of a horror movie and twists them into something new. If you have not yet had a chance to see this movie I promise it does not disappoint.
