Ya Basta!

Some have said of the recent protests against immigration legislation that they are futile and ineffectual. That they were generally ignored by the media and will have little impact. I guarantee you that these events were prominently featured on every Spanish-speaking channel and radio station from coast to coast.
Have you seen this?

People are fighting over the hearts and minds of the Latino voting bloc. Some people are extremely concerned.
Suddenly, Latinos have to confront that the GOP is not just about Jesus, pro-life, anti-gay and anti-Islamic sentiment. They must deal with the realization that the Republican party regards them as part of the problem. It may not stop immigration legislation anymore than we can stop the war. But with Latino voters comprising at least 6% of the voting population nationwide (and plenty more in some states), and the margin of victory being pretty thin these days, it could easily cost Republicans a local election, a sunbelt state, or the presidency. I have no doubt that this is a galvanizing event for Latinos, and that a great number of young Latinos will be voting this year who otherwise would not have. Many people will not soon forget these recent events. The amount of mobilization and organization propelled by these mass protests is not easily measured, and they do not necessarily translate into political victories. But they are very real nonetheless. Everything counts in large amounts.

Ya Basta!

Take Action

An aside:
I recently saw the "V for Vendetta" flim. It's pretty ok. But through these unrelated events, I realized that Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos (aka Delegato Zero) is a real and living example of the iconic power of the mask. "Marcos is a human being, any human being, in this world. Marcos is all the exploited, marginalized and oppressed minorities, resisting and saying, 'Enough'!"
