Back from Portland with a bag of free books, and another of books I paid for. Had a Oaxacan dinner with someone called the Sweet Potato Queen. She forced expensive tequila on me and made me remove my tie.

Doc and I were able to stay together. No hiding. It was wonderful.

last year:

i woke up a little late. there was a message on my voicemail about what had happened. i turned on the tv, and watched footage of the towers falling.

they ran a piece of video. the camera was a few blocks away. the video journalist was hugging next to a chain link fence. a wave of dust was approaching fast. fast. a couple of runners were right at the edge of it, trying to escape. and then, deep in the cloud, barely a shadow of a figure, i saw another runner. something lifted the figure, arms out, legs jerk, back arching, up. it lifted a couple of feet, the cloud overtook the camera, and the feed was lost.

i saw the same footage later. the last few seconds had been edited out.
