Now that you mention it, "art for art's sake" has never been one of my favorites. Especially when those wacky Germans take a crack at it. I heard that Klaus Kinski's biography was quite a freak show. Maybe I'll read that and never sleep again.

Yeah, i'll let ya know what i think of "A Box of Matches". i have a feeling that Nicholson Baker is going to be one of those writers that i love to the point of reading and collecting all of his books.

"After the Quake" was good! Murakami is quite brilliant. You absolutely must read "Wild Sheep Chase." I have heard that his others are great too. The book that got me hooked was "Sputnik, sweethaert." but everything I have read since has been even better.
