happy news: doc and i have called a truce. she's here now, we're eating ice cream, talking, kissing, etc. so, the breakup didn't take.

*********************************

six months ago, i sent a piece to the new yorker, expecting to get a rejection letter. okay, that's a lie. i expected to never hear anything.

thing is, a couple of days ago i got a rejection letter. allow me to quote:

"We're sorry to say that this manuscript is not right for us, in spite of its
evident merit."

"evident merit"! so, now i've created this fantasy. the new yorker has a series of letters they send out to those who submit, and this one is right there at the top of the scale. bad submissions get terse responses, middling pieces get polite, firm no's, and those of us who almost made the cut get "evident merit".

i know. we all get the same letter. but, i'm clinging to my fantasy.

matter-eater lad, evidently meritorious

*********************************

bless that doc. she's asleep on the couch right now. heavy breathing, light snoring.

emmett has been stalking a bug all night. it's a flyer, though, and is staying near the ceiling. i picked emmett up a couple of times, held him out, and he flashed his claws at the insect, made a couple of grabs. i even pulled out a chair, and brought him right up to his prey. but, emmett just batted at it. he wouldn't or perhaps couldn't kill it.

ninjatuner:
Beautiful news, MEL. It just HAD to be so.

Consider this nugget from Playboy:
"We only rarely publish novel excerpts and if we do, they are by well known writers whose work readers are waiting for anxiously." Hm. Fuck me, then, I guess.

If you're up for it at all, the Sea and Cake w/ Califone are playing here on Wenesday, so they must be playing in Seattle this week. You should go. Take the Doc.
Good Luck.
