the end of the story for the birthday girl follows:

How friendship works is this, she said. Two people meet, and they purchase a friendship crucible. They each remove a lock of hair, and burn them together, and must keep the fires going for as long as they intend to remain in the contractual agreement called friendship.

And when it finally did happen, when we finally spent long, tangled moments together, I asked her questions, and she answered. And it wasnt perfect. And it was better for not being perfect.

The act was never perfect, but Lopez and I put on the horse costume, jumped on the unicycle, and did our best. And she would wait for me.

I wondered how motorcycles worked. I wondered how the moon worked. I wondered how a marriage worked.

day off. read tim gatreaux. bought eric b. and rakim's "paid in full" on vinyl at a nearby second hand shop.

when said graphic artist spoke on a panel in SF...maybe he was drunk...but it was just a bunch of glib answers from a man whose book covers can be quite exceptional (like the wind-up bird chronicle). maybe i need to give him a second chance...but his novel didn't help things any. instead of talking about graphics and cool stuff, the topics would lean towards what kind of underwear people were wearing or something equally time-wasting. he did do great work on the chris wares book.
