An unorthodox point to ponder

Immanuel Kant says that:

When you say: "that's a beautiful building" you don't mean that the building is intrinsically beautiful, you mean that it is a beautiful building.

In other words, the building is only beautiful because it meets some expectations of yours that make it a building.

If you knew that the building was so cramped inside that no one could move in there, then you might say that the building is not beautiful, BUT in terms of it being a sculpture, then you might say that it IS beautiful.

This BUILDING is ugly. It's cramped and horrible. You can't build anything near it because of its odd size and the windows are all funny shapes. But this object as a SCULPTURE is beautiful. It's interesting to look at, and it has angled windows. It's very post-modern.

So perhaps beauty DOES have something to do with expectations then? If you did not know that a certain 'donkey' was actually a horse you might say that "that is a simply stunning donkey. It is beautiful" then upon finding out it is a horse you say "well, it really is nothing special. It's fairly average and there are better ones around."

People who do not percieve something as beautiful would thus have expectations that were probably too high.

Hype kills beauty?

hype definately kills beauty. expectations kills beauty. so many things kill beauty. the word beautiful is used too much to explain things. it should be a sacred word and only used on special occasions.
