... and check

Do you have any goals that you've had on your "to do" list for a long time? Not necessarily big goals, but the little ones. I've had this one for aaaaages - and even though it wasn't a major goal, it still felt great to do it.

I went on a guided tour of an old cemetery. Now, before you make fun, lol, know that I'm a HUGE genealogy buff, and local history rocks my socks. I first heard about these tours about five years ago, and one of my very favourite childhood authors, Kit Pearson (who is Canadian, btw) was doing a special guided tour of the cemetery through the Old Cemeteries Society, and for only five dollars. Well, I missed that, and was bummed, but always intended to go try again for a tour. Five years later, I decided that the upcoming Sunday I was going to take that tour.

Today's tour was "Black History" - and it was fascinating to learn what life was like for many of the people who came to Canada, and the challenges they faced. The first govenor of the Colony of British Columbia, Sir James Douglas, was half black - and that was in 1858.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
1858, 600 black women, men and children landed in Victoria, B.C., fleeing from San Francisco, Californias repressive black codes. It was also in 1858 that the colony of Victoria was founded, so the black pioneers, as they came to be called, were one of the founding groups of the colony. article

I really enjoyed myself, and I think I might try to make this a regular Sunday adventure. I'm still hobbling about with my cane, but hopefully that'll get easier in time.

We sent in an assessment form to an immigration lawyer - hopefully we'll here back soon smile

Heckler is going to set up a ChipIn page for us, in hopes of raising a little money for the immigration process - lawyer's fees & visas and such.

Dress
I think I found my dress yesterday! My mom & I were out shopping for my bro's bday and there was a sale on dresses... and well... we're girls tongue So we grabbed several in my size and I started trying them on.

I tried the brown one on the far right. It came in silver as well as in blue, so I tried those on too. The blue one made me feel like I was wearing Cinderella's nightie, and the silver one didn't go with my skin, and the brown one just didn't feel weddingy.

The others didn't work either... some didn't fit properly, some were really the wrong colour... but the one I found is just... oh, it's cute! I can't show it here, due to the groom being on the site tongue but I can show you what it's like - that's not cheating, is it?

It's a cross between this

and this

We're kind of thinking of going with a 50s look, with a little bit o' rockabilly. What do you think? Any ideas on what Heckler should wear?

Location
We're going to get married on Vancouver Island, in a very private ceremony (possibly just the JP, a photographer, and some immediate family). Really, it should be easy to choose a location... but it's not - there are just too many gorgeous spots here to choose from!

We could have a wedding at the X Mansion (srsly)

or near the waterfalls at the Sooke Potholes

or at Beacon Hill Park - a childhood favourite of mine... it's beautiful, and there is a petting zoo there too tongue

We spent a very special day at the park in the picture below... and I kinda sorta almost want to get married in the Octopus blush

So that's where we're at so far. No JP secured, no photographer... my mom will make us a cake. BUT! I has a dress.

Everyone was sweet about it, and I'm glad everyone liked it, but maybe 2 or 3 people actually mentioned some things that would better it. I was actually hoping for some actual criticism, and I really didn't get any, so I took it down early.

Thanks for the sweet comment nonetheless, though. It was appreciated.
