As for shooting outdoors you can do one of two things:
Use a strobe/flash to fill in the shadows. This will give you the most control as you can diffuse the flash and angle it any way you want - regardless of the position of the sun.
You can also use a reflector to reflect the sun to minimize shadows in her face.
If you are using a white reflector, it will be a really soft reflection and won't look harsh at all. The silver and gold reflectors typically give a more harsh reflection of light.
