Is Mexico indeed a failed state?

I feel compelled to share with everyone the situation in Mexico. For a long time I thought media worldwide was exaggerating portraying the state of violence and corruption that has been steadily growing in recent years, but now I have an absolute certainty that crime and government have made mexicans hostages in their own country.

As many of you probably know, 2 months ago 43 students protesting in Iguala, Guerrero, were intercepted by municipal police and handed over to a drug cartel in order to make them disappear. All this sparked a wave of pacific movements all around the country and social media. This past thursday, november 20th, the anniversary of Mexican Revolution, saw thousands of people gathering peacefuly across Mexico, including Mexico's City central plaza.

Riot police quickly intevened and dispersed the crowd, and 11 people were taken into custody. 2 of those people taken are students at my university, and they are facing charges of criminal organization and disruption of the peace, but the process is completely irregular. They have no evidence of the charges, they haven't been given or even authorized legal counceling and they have already taken them to a federal prison. They were forced to give their mobiles and all their social media passwords.

Guilty or not, this is a repressive way to handle things, and people here are getting increasingly tired.

What's gonna happen next? At this point, many would welcome international intervention, like in Colombia.

El pueblo que no conoce su pasado, está condenado a repetirlo. Lamentable nuestra situación :/

The 'war on drugs' criminalized the wrong people. The US won't step in for fear of upsetting the patrons of the CHEAP labor market down there. Stay out of the cross-hairs.
