I want to start getting tattoos. I have a design for a star cluster on the back of each shoulder and I want to get a tiny star in the cartilage of my right ear.

My question to you all (who are inked) - is how do you deal with working in the corporate world? Those who are privileged to work in a tattoo shop or in the entertainment business don't have to deal with it, but for the real estate agents and the lawyers and the retail salepersons and the receptionists, etc. in the world - how do your employers deal with your ink?

I work for my father's real estate appraisal firm as a commercial property appraiser. Stars on the back of my shoulders aren't going to be an issue - nor would a decorated ankle or something on my hips. But I love the look of a tattoo on the fleshy part of the hand in between the thumb and pointer finger, and on the inside of the arm below my elbow crease. I know my father would consider that inappropriate for the work environment when dealing with clients. I'm trying to convince him that ink on your skin has nothing to do with the work you produce, but old habits die hard. And I know a lot of retail work doesn't allow showing tattoos.

Just interested in hearing stories about work vs. tattoos since I'll most likely be in that position in the future. Thanks!

If you have to seprate your work life from your personal life, like most of us do, keep them covered untill you own your own business or exept the pain and life changes that come from doing what you want when you want to.

Corsair (above) said it best I think - "choose places that you can cover up or expose by choice . . then you have the best of it!"

I am a Sr. Manager at a large corporation and have many tattoos. I would love to get full sleeves, but feel it is best that I wait. It just isn't practical for me to think I can always wear long sleeves in the TX heat.

Your body is your own, but you also must face facts and realize that you live in a judgemental society. Not everyone is open minded and apreciates the art of tattooing and/or piercings. Will you always work for your father? Are you willing to risk future employment? What about client/customer reactions?

You mentioned that you like tattoos between the thumb and forefinger. When I see those, I think prison tattoo. And that is coming from a person that LOVES tattoos...
