My journey is starting so soon. I've got a plane ticket to the other side of the world - in September my whole life will change. Me, my bicycle, and a backpack take off from SFO (San Francisco) on September 10th and arrive at AKL (Auckland) on September 12th. (The date change makes it seem much longer than it is!)

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
So the first fixed-gear bike that I built up was a beautiful Nishiki International touring frame. I was too excited and too ready to do the conversion, so I built it up with the eventual goal of purchasing another frame and switching over. After riding the Nishiki for a few weeks and absolutely loving it, I finally got ahold of a really nice silver Peugeot road frame and I did the conversion, reserving my Nishiki for touring and riding the Peugeot. It was two or three weeks on the Peugeot before I finally gave up on it. Too heavy! Too creaky! And what do I need that many bikes for anyway?

She has pink grip-tape and a pink chain these days, as well as a few stickers...

So now I'm selling the Peugeot (and my old red Raleigh Royale mixte - beautiful bicycle, locals, in case yer interested - $150 or best offer) and I converted the Nishiki back into a fixed gear. God it's beautiful. And so perfect to ride. I'm so happy to be back on it. I'm going to spend the rest of the summer collecting all the parts I'll need to make it the most amazing touring bike ever, and then right before I leave I'll build it up and take it with me. I just -need- to ride fixed in the city. I've never felt so free, powerful and comfortable on a bicycle as I do on my ghetto li'l Nishiki International 42:16.

So many of my good friends are leaving, too, or have already left. This city is going to be a different place entirely - if I ever come back - I don't know what it'll be like. But who knows if I ever will come back? Vancouver has been so good to me. I've got amazing friends, a good social dynamic, a great job, and a lovely apartment. But it's time to move on. I'm a transient creature; I can't survive in a cage (even a cage as lovely as this one) for very long. It's been a year and a half (more!) behind these glass walls.

Days like these are so comfortable and warm; I'll miss her but she's got her own journey too. We're spreading out over the globe like a net of tiny twinkling lights and love.

I am sad to be leaving it behind. I am sad that I don't have as much time this summer as I wish I had, but no amount of time would really, truly be enough to see and get to know all of the amazing people who are becoming a part of my life. This journey is what I need, what I want.

I'll still be updating, of course. I couldn't stay away from you guys. And don't worry. I'm not leaving for a while.

This week I'm going back home to see my family and some of my best friends. Then I'll be back in Vancouver for an action-packed month of events, friends and craziness.

What is the next big change you've got planned or can foresee happening in your life?
If you don't have a change planned, do you feel like you need one?

Would you consider yourself a stable or a transient person?

Gorgeous photos! Congrats on the building of the bike.... though I'm not much of a biker myself, I have a lot of friends who are. Fixed gear is pretty hardcore, from what I understand. "Drive stick and ride fixed"--or something like that....

This part of your entry made me think of a book I just finished reading, A Trip to the Stars by Nicholas Christopher.

If you have time during your travels to start a new book, I'd highly reccommend it. smile It was a pretty fast read, too.

....and I am a completely transient creature. I'm happiest living out of a backpack. smile
