Watched Advent Children. My god was that awesome. So much better than the theatrical Final Fantasy movie, both by virtue of drawing on an actual game setting and characters (arguably the best one, even), and by virtue of having some absolutely insane action sequences. I'm not sure it would have large mainstream appeal, because about half my reaction comes from loving seeing some of my favorite characters again, and the other half from the incredible computer animation, neither of which are likely to apply to the general public.
But if you like Final Fantasy, kung fu flicks, or excellent CGI...this is your movie.
I do have a few complaints: for how realistic the graphics were, there was too little impact from the fighting on the characters. Only one instance of any blood whatsoever, no bruising or other visible injuries. Some people gasping and staggering and that's about it. Surprisingly little magic given how immensely magic-centric my play experience with FFVII was. And nearly all the characters take a back seat to Cloud, who gets most of the screen time and nearly all the action (barring an incredible martial arts battle with Tifa, and a few cameo bits of the crew fighting a giant dragon summon....but in the end they're just a stepstool to Cloud-based victory.). Oh well.

It also reminded me of how little I like Nomura.
