Watching the fifth season of Oz on DVD. I hate to say it, but I think the series went downhill in season four and probably never quite recovered. In part I think the problem is that they've got most of the same characters still around and still the focus and they're running out of plot to wrap around them. Too many over the top storylines starting up, The Reverend Cloutier, walled up, blown up, and still not only surviving, but appearing to people in their minds and instructing them, also vanishing from the hospital. A convict winning the lottery with numbers "told to him by God". Too many encounters without guards around. I realize that the guards can't be everywhere, but you'd think they'd be posted most places where prisoners would be on any sort of regular basis.
Repeats of old storylines, more or less, too. Oh well. The acting's still good, there's still a weird kind of empathy with even many of the more despicable prisoners (Schillinger, in particular), and the usual fights and warring and, if you're into that sort of thing, full male nudity.
