Wandered back home last weekend. Nothing big going on, but the college where my mom works was giving the PRAXIS (the Maryland standardized test for would-be teachers) and they needed proctors. Since it's a totally skill-less (and really, pointless) job, it's doled out primarily via nepotism, so my sister and I got the change to spend a morning watching college students take a test in exchange for $100. Pretty good deal, when you consider that I spent that time reading my book, for the most part.

While I was there, I got a chance to spend some time with J. I'm becoming more and more convinced that I may at some point end up dating her. I took her out for a couple drinks, and we talked a bit, and more and more she seems to be dropping hints that us dating is a plausible option. In one evening she pointed out how her mother thinks the two of us should get together, how we'd make an awfully good set of parents (she has a kid, so this is not as disturbing a thought as one might think), and how even her boyfriend has given her permission to leave him for me. (This last on account of my having, you know, a job and and thus the ability to possibly contribute something to the child-rearing process.)

Seriously: I try not to be that guy who thinks women are totally into me, but she does an awful lot of belaboring the subject of us as a couple. On the other hand, I don't think this is really a very good tradeoff for someone who is currently still more or less attached* to his ex-girlfriends. I somehow doubt occasional liasons without any commitment will be on the table, hmm?

She also invited me up to visit some time. She obliquely mentioned wanting to go to the nice French restaurant in her town, and while I don't think it was a hint, I might take her out to dinner while I'm up there. (If you're wondering where the boyfriend is, the answer is always "work." He's an artist, which means all the time of a job, with none of the income.) It is totally worth the price of a nice dinner to see this girl in a dress.

*By "attached to" I do not mean "pining away for." There are various ways in which I am a typical copmuter geek internet journaler, but angsty longings for women I used to date is not one of them. The longings are not angsty at all. I actually still visit/host both of the two girls I seriously dated in college on a semi-regular basis, and it is not in an entirely platonic capacity, if you catch my meaning.
