The weekend turned out pretty well. I slogged through ridiculous traffic to get out to Frostburg to see J on friday. I'm pretty sure that if terrorists had some kind of plot to annihilate DC, an excellent remedy would be for me to describe its effects on the surrounding countryside, after which they would shake their heads sadly, mutter something about "reaping the rewards of the infidel" and turn their attention elsewhere, to targets that we would not be better off without. Nonetheless, that makes it that much nicer to get out to a place like Frostburg to see someone I love.

J's show was pretty impressive, although my artistic ignorance makes that a fairly meaningless appraisal. I'd never really seen her work before, except for a couple sculptures that she was making when I was up there visiting once, and those I only saw because she needed someone to hold things in place while she welded them together. He sculture doesn't lend itself to description, though, so I won't dwell on it too much. She did have some nice hand-forged copper jewelry, though. A lot of it is designed as "body sculpture," i.e. as decoration while essentially nude. Think polished copper winding around the curves of a woman's body, with spirals and waves to emphasize and draw attention. It was awfully sexy in the photos of the model she'd found. This will be revisited should I eve befriend one of the site's models.

After the show, I stayed the night at her house. Nothing too exciting, just time spent with her and her sister, and, to a lesser extent, her fiance (he went to bed early). It's the sort of thing that makes for poor narrative, but is simultaneously the most enjoyable part of life, you know? Just meandering time spent together.

The party wasn't until the evening, so I stopped at all the "scenic locations" on the way back east. I had a nice little "commune with Nature" moment at one: I walked out to the outlook, and looked around. From the botttom of the mountain, I could hear a river, and I was kinda thirsty, so I just climbed/hiked down, drank from the river, and then relaxed on the bank for a while. It was the first time in a while I felt like I had my own space: not because I was paying for it and society deigns to protect that, but because I went out of my way, off of any path, and found a nice place. That, and frankly, it was just awfully satisfying to want a drink, climb down a mountain to get it, and then climb back up.

The Mary Kay party was... well, I guess that while the subject matter was not to my liking, the demographics were... I was the only unattached male there, so I got some attention. I'm not really interested in any of Lauren's or Rusty's friend, but attention is always nice. Then, after most people had left, I spent the rest of the night sparring with a couple of people who had done some martial arts. Both were better than me, and I'm all bruised today, but sparring is still fun.

I hereby resolve to go find a dojo to study at.
