Ah, the holidays. That lovely time of year, when everyone I know starts bitching about how I don't want anything and I'm just so hard to shop for. I think that's what always gets me the most about the rampant materialism of the season. (Yeah, this is another rant about the true meaning of whatever. I'll keep it short). It's not so much the sudden buying frenzy that everyone seems to go into, but the fact that I have to spend the month getting scolded that I don't want more things.

On a more pleasant note, I went to a Christmas party over the weekend: L's boyfriend's family's. (Quite a string of possessives) I am a bit disturbed to discover I like her boyfriend's mother somewhat more than I like him. She seems to be one of those very verbally-playful people, whom you can just insult for the fun of throwing witty comebacks at each other. Also, she was thrilled with the knife-pen that I have, which is a positive mark for any woman I meet.

I caught a ride down to the party with L's roommate, who got to learn the delights of getting lost with me on the way back. For the record, when frustrated by something that ultimately doesn't matter (such as figuring out how the fuck to get to the Denny's that was totally right there off of the highway exit), I slowly begin to try crazier and crazier plans until I'm doing completely arbitrary things and just generally raving about the whole situation. Some people find this immensely entertaining, others (like R) hate it. Fortunately, L's roommate is one of the former.

Speaking of R, I got to talk to her this weekend. Same as always: nice to hear from her again, but a little bittersweet. She's seeing someone pretty seriously, apparently -- considering moving in with him. I'm happy she's found someone she really likes up there; I'm sure it's good for her.
