Yesterday, I checked in with the child in me. He's obviously beein screaming to get out. So I took the redheaded stepchild to Magic Mountain. I didn't realize how, in his more mature manifestation, he'd actually be nervous about riding big coasters. His older self also had a huge disdain for waiting in lines. It was an activity he denounced outright since high school. Nonetheless, once he took his first drop, all anxieties flew out the door. The kid was alive and screaming at the top of his lungs, in total elation. He didin't remember coasters being like this. Smooth, fast, and absolutely mind-boggling. From Collossus, to Riddler's Revenge, to Deja Vu, to Scream, he ran, smacking the back of his heels with each stride, not stopping once to try his hand at winning a stuffed animal(from early on he knew the carney games thing was just bad economics). After his adrenaline had been exhausted he was ready to go, but not without a quick stop at Dippin' Dots.

OBSERVATIONS:
When did kids become so fat? I've never seen more obesity under the age of 16 in my life. In my elementary school there were two fat girls, and I can name them. Sarah Sernacker and Claudia Mumblo. That's, well, a long time ago. Nowadays being obese is the norm. I asked a ninth grader if there were a lot of fat kids in her class. Her reply, "most of them are fat". That's sad. It's also an embarrassing testament to how glutonous our society has become.

To round out the day, the spoiled little red headed fucker with the attitude problem and the foul mouth dragged me to a midnight showing of THE HULK. And let me tell you, it's a good thing he always hated going to bed early. The movie was phenomenal. I know a lot of you are thinking the trailer looks hokie, but I"m here to tell you, it's unwise to second-guess one of the few geniuses left in Hollywood. Ang Lee is one of the great filmmakers of our time and this undertaking in no less than monumental. The CGI'd HULK comes to life. You love him, empathize with him, believe in him, and root for him. Lee melds the animated world with the real world beatifully, creating a seamless interaction between reality and fantasy. I was stunned, as was the entire audience, many of whom brought "Hulk", "Smash", and "Wham" signs. Do yourself a favor, go see this movie.

I woke up this moring as if it had all been a wonderful dream. Immediately I was reminded of my adulthood. My back was stiff, I was late for a meeting, and I was worried about where my next paycheck was coming from. But there was a fresh exuberance, a looking forward to the day and all of it's possibilities. For that, I thank the little redhead who constantly reminds me that he's the reason I'm here...to enjoy every moment.
