They used 3DS Max for the rendering, though all of the animation is generated procedurally from the midi files. I wouldn't even know where to begin for doing procedural keyframing, but I want to try doing something simple manually.

Now I just need a simple midi song and an idea of how I want to do the instruments.

If only the coffee maker was the worst of my problems.

I think the best advice you can receive has already been said by the folks above me. I'm pulling for you to get out of this rut by the company. You're smart as hell and graduating from where you went is no small feat!

However, don't make the same mistake I made w/ my time @ Bear Stearns: I prioritized my time and made them 1st before my personal life.

I completely agree with the advice of asking for help, making sure you get detailed information from them about why your performance is unsatisfactory and addressing those issues one by one, and making work your priority right now.
