I am allowed to work in NZ for another 2 years (after much waiting in line to wait in line). I kind of doubt it'll last more than one though. When asked about the country, most people think Americans have trouble with the pace. I could see this, but this is one of the reasons I came here... to live at a different pace. to see if slowing down would bring me more peace... which it has and it hasn't.

For me, though, the problem is the uptake of technology. Broadband isn't accessible via naked adsl. Similarly, without being tied to technology, or realizing how integral it is going forward, the gap will become wider and wider. This is not good for those of us who are computer engineers.

When I talk about this, I am often confronted with patriotism, "If you don't want to be here then why are you here?!?" This is a concept that is very, for lack of a better word, foreign to me. I come from the great melting pot, the land of opportunity, the generators of war and debt (with its ever plummeting dollar), the land of the free and the home of the slave. I am used to bashing my country, where the people here are often hastily allegiant to theirs. Anyhow, in answer to this, I'm tired of moving. I'm still filtering down my possessions to make my next move easier. Plus, proving yourself at a new job is hard. I'm not ready to slave myself out for 6 months to earn a good name.

With all that in mind, I need something that will bring me more peace. I'm thinking of a surfing holiday. Perhaps Fiji or Bali? I've got three weeks of holiday time saved up, and this upcoming autumn/winter is starting to give me s.a.d.

Thanks, mate!

No rioting here!

There were reportedly a couple of fights, but considering that they estimated 40,000 people were swarming downtown (a 6-block radius), it's pretty impressive.

The elite 8 and final 4 parties were totally problem free . . . unless you consider drunken white people as far as the eye can see yelling "whooo" or "champions!" a problem.

There were also a couple of "Mario! Mario!" chants, as you can imagine. He's the hero of the moment.

The Chalmers shot was just amazing-- I went out into my porch immediately afterwards, and could hear this white-noise ambient roar as literally the entire city was screaming in their living rooms. It was surreal and pretty fantastic.
