Ender's Game was the book that got me into Scientifiction... that and Startide Rising by David Brin which is a fitting book for you to check out if you haven't yet as it has a bunch of "uplifted" animals, meaning smarter chimps, dolphins, and whales...

How I did that, it is called having to back up for 600 feet and finding a low laying concrete abutment. Yah it was fucking swell.
