Oh my...has it been that long since I was watching that can of hominy burn in the ill formed fire of drunken city dwellers??? It has...well, once we had the can in the fire we spent several minutes..make that about an hour..trying to figure out how to get it out...Keeping in mind that we were drinking constantly while we kept throwing out options. We finally opted for the 2 big sticks soaked in beer method..I think Emeril has used this technique so it was not without merit... smile whatever

As we moved the charred can to the side of the fire..we all took turns, since no one could hang onto it long enough to bring it completely out of the
fire...like having to grab small pieces of dim sum with huge tree trunks.. smile smile smile Once we got the boiling can to the safety of air temperature, we wondered how we should eat it...plain???..As much as I love hominy, I voted for condiments...Again as in the story of stone soup, we minions went in search of condiments..At last, a wide variety of flavors were at our command.

Pepper, hot sauces, ketchup, mustard, fish sauce and about 10 herbs and spices known only to us were eventually added to the unsuspecting white kernals begging for mastication...There actually happened, by accident totally, to be 3 of us that had profesional culinary experience...After a polite interval of tasting the liquid we were concocting to simmer the hominy in, we all deemed it fit for consumption..armed with spoons that had to be shared, we dove in and after polite intervals of trying to eat something a tad too hot (temperature wise) for the hungry mouths, the feast was pronounced a winner...much trying to remember what we all had put into the can was useless...it was a once in a lifetime experience...you had to be there, you had to have tasted it...and you have to have come to the all too soon realiziation that you would never taste the like again...a puff of culinary smoke stolen by a strong senseless draft...

You may wonder how I would describe the sensation...the taste, the experience...alas, I did not get a taste...not because I wouldn't share a spoon...but because I wandered off to the far away facilities and by the time I got back there was much gnashing of teeth and smacking of lips in regret that they had not counted me missing from the tasting...Oh well...there is always next year...I will bring the hominy to show the fire starters what not to get when sent in search of marshmellows... smile smile smile

As much as I love Hominy I would take a marshmellow over it any time.
