Tron

So I finally rented Tron and loved it. From start to finish.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the actual acting and costumes of the Programs. Yes they are supposed to be artificial but it felt like a rip off of the Matrix AND the costumes were terrible. Also the ISOs could have been expanded more than it was. The pace of the movie was great but maybe 20 minutes on the ISOs would have been better than nothing.

The rest however was awesome. I felt very agnostic about the whole story since I couldn't relate to it. I was never a fan of Tron or coin-op video games of the 8-bit era. But as the story continued the meat of it began to satisfy.

I don't know, maybe I just miss 3D games that were games, and not the current hype trains that keep getting derailed because the publisher doesn't care about quality or game play. I look at it and go, yes this is more what games should be after 35 years of innovation.

But even then Radio, Television and Movies have only barely gotten better. Satellite radio where most of it is still stereo, HDTV with barely any 3D content, and IMAX which most people don't even care about.. at least video games should have continued driving innovation more than it has in the last 5 years.

But now gaming is going mobile to try to chase profits instead of pushing AI, realistic physics and auto-stereoscopic display.

The world of Tron as described by the movie could have supported much bigger games, and in several genres. I guess you'd have to ignore the actual video game that was made, but that's a given for a game made after a movie.

Then there's also the ENCOM 12 jab at Microsoft. It is funny that they are losing money and still can't square their business. I'm glad Windows 8 is at least going to get them off x86 architecture but that by itself isn't as meaningful a change as them moving to a Touch influenced UI and mobile platforms.

And later parts of the film remind me of Star Wars.. but that it doesn't have enough story for it to be a franchise. If for nothing else I'd like another movie, or to watch the TV show to see how Cora deals with being in the real world (and where the substance for her body came from (that's a huge amount of energy). It is something that was not really investigated in Star Trek or explained quite in that way by Stargate, but buffering the crew and just having their personality in the machine (which is the singularity so many people are waiting for), would still require being able to draw that power out of the buffer. Cora's code would need that incredible amount of cellular information (or a viable alternative), and some way to construct it was enough for her to not only pop out of the machine in a living body, but with her clothes etc.

As such, I mean with a focus on going back and forth, it is a bit sad they didn't take it as far as other Sci-Fi stories would have. I guess it wasn't important given the time constraints.
