Can Bungie rival Crytek? Epic and Valve
And I mean on PC platform specifically not just Xbox.
I mean I look at those kinds of pictures, and played the games (except ODST) and can'r help but wonder what they could have accomplished had Microsoft taken them and the Xbox 360 seriously. Reach is going to be nuts, they had me at Jetpacks.
But is that all they are and all they mean to be even post Microsoft?
What communities, from which platforms are going to support Bungie?
Will they release and support real free development tools like Valve? Epic? Crytek? even Unity (etc)? Because it is a shame that there's no PC version of reach being mad that people can mod.
I'm also wondering about the role that EA has played in this. Where they could have done more to secure PC's place in gaming but instead murdered so many core, and dear franchises.. and releasing so many new IPs.. what for? idiots.
Consider what Bungie accomplished for Xbox, then Xbox 360. Consider what Crytek managed on PC given what had become of the platform, rife with piracy and the market heading face first into the ground... who would be able to put together a machine capable of playing Crytek's games? Even so is Epic releasing games? on PC.. or focusing more on consoles and their tools?
Unless Bungie is planning to directly take on Valve with a content distribution network or MMO there presence on the PC platform will be limited (for revenue) unless they are planning some crazy new IP... if so.. I mean great but could they make games for that top niche of players who really want the most out of their games and hardware?
Obviously Bungie was in a better position to put games out and make money for so many years that probably won't change. Shame.
But what could they accomplish if they do decide to make top tier PC games, given the best of breed, Crytek (and EPIC but they make Gears and profit from it's sale on 360) seems to be sliding out of that role and kissing up to consoles for profit (for EA)...
The resolution of Halo has always been problem but that was all Microsoft policy and the inferior hardware of the console. But they managed to put out an amazing game anyway and make millions. Twice.. doesn't matter how many of them they make, 3 and ODST, because what are they accomplishing? and yet they continue to cool their heels in the mud, though how fair is that to say of Reach? instead of going toe to toe with Crytek.
Thing is Why isn't Reach on PC too?
Which is it? that Bungie can't manage to support both Microsoft gaming platforms? (360 and Win7) because they are so different? or that Bungie simply couldn't make a dx11 Halo, or game otherwise if they wanted to? Or do they really want to keep making console games? for like a decade+
Worse is that Crytek is putting on their galoshes too.
Why is Crysis 2 on consoles? Obivously Crytek and EA NEED to make console games, they need the money. And the game is still going to be on PC for those who can play it.
It'll be fun to see though how many fools opt for the console version... if only for the multiplayer? but you have to pay to play it online with Xbox? so... isn't it worth it to make the minimum effort to buy a cheap PC to play it instead of bothering with it on console?
Again, we'll see. If the numbers are high then it really does mean that PC can't call people the way it once did and people are willing to keep paying Microsoft for online multiplayer. Where where is the modding possibility on Xbox? That too depricates the value of Crysis on console but people who buy the console version will simply ignore.
Where does that leave the prospects of upgrading Xbox 360 and PS3 so that they can actually provide games that Bungie and Crytek want to make. If they still do...
Why should Crytek play in the mud with the likes of Epic and Bungie? It can't only be because of the money. And Valve.. I'm not really surprised they are finally opening up to PS3.. but where does that leave top tier Valve games.. and a next generation Source engine?
But I can't even see that Bungie or Crytek even want to continue making money.. um.. games on PC.
Epic at least saves some tiny amount of face by stating firmly that their next engine, the heart and soul of so many console games, and PC, is just waiting on the next generation. Leaving Unreal Engine 3 to finish out this generation that doesn't seem to have a scheduled end. Between now and then, Bungie can make a new name for itself while the dust keeps blowing around before those rains are ready to fall.

But what is it?
There are other engines.. from several other companies of course.. but are they going to keep helping PC gaming to grow. Is it getting too expensive to make new IP.. great! what about all those older games that people want to see? you know franchises?
Where's EA in pushing that development of PC games like they used to? is the money really gone? are those old franchises (Sim City) really in the vault? They are like the only company that can do enough to keep console from being the heart of the market since they are the holders of so many franchises that can't translate well to console but could if they were still studios making those games, and because they can manage the marketing campaigns needed to sell the games that are being made. If they fail, it isn't like those other companies, Epic Valve Bungie that were pillars of PC gaming can keep anything going in the same scope of genres that EA holds.. or held leading titles for.
Is Epic ready to make another Unreal game.. without Midway.. where isn't odd that Epic isn't publishing it's own games? You'd think that by now they'd be able to push 4 on their own. or at least a spin off for PC between now and engine 4. Something just for PC or at least with more appeal than the last one that didn't do so well, compared to Halo. Or is that proof enough that Bungie should stay on consoles while they are still viable? as in as revenue for PC games continues to peter out, so too will revenue on consoles due to saturation if there is no new generation coming soon and so many games that are 'just shooters'.
And again when Epic and Crytek are happy to make console games.. Can Bungie make PC games? do they even want to? has it been so long that they couldn't get a PC game made and published without Microsoft's help.
Wouldn't it be funny if they had to tap EA.. or Activision. Either would be hilarious. Sad. Shameful.. and then why not just ask to be absorbed?
Who besides Microsoft will publish Bungie's games? so that they can avoid being re-assimilated, and to make money.. I mean they would need their own distribution platform. But how to manage that.. for PC anyway, if Microsoft would have issue with that platform working with Xbox Live? Bungie could do the Valve thing if they had that shot, to distribute digitally directly to Xbox Live.
If they did, even without Halo and the Microsoft marketing machine behind them, they could own both platforms. The PC vacuum, and being able to make multiple games for Xbox at once. They'd also have to grow to do that. So whatever their next project is, and hoping Reach makes millions, they need money.
Consider if Bungie put out a Marathon reboot. Or if they managed to get the rights to Oni. Whatever they end up doing and whatever the platform they are going to make a multiplayer game. No matter what they do it will have to eclipse Halo and establish Bungie as a stand alone entity that can without Microsoft, suceed where they always have. It has been years, but those platforms, rebooted, would be very awesome on PC.
They still have all the ingredients, all the talent, the drive and opportunity. And have extra platforms so that whatever they want to make, they can give it to as many people as they want. Just like Epic, Valve and Crytek.
