happy earth day!

or rather release of Avatar bd day!

how to celebrate it thought when I want the 3D version? frown no point in owning it twice.. when I've seen it several times already.

the worse part is that since it was released there have been interesting things done in 3D that don't focus on the CG part being in 3D but do more for the scenes and actors being in 3D.

For instance I found this lap dance that was shot in 3D (nothing special, just a proof of concept shot in a kitchen) and just the chair in the middle, actors in front of it and kitchen scene behind it was enough to demonstrate the power of 3D over 2D.

The problem is without the glasses, full screen and full frame rate and resolution, it can't compare with 2D that has the full screen, full resolution and steady fluid frame rate.

II's like asking if you'd prefer to watch it smashed or sober. I'll take sober.

Once the BBC (also NHK and Discover channel) starts releasing 3D films, considering their recent works How the earth made us and wonder of the solar system, with each having awesome CG effects, the more mind blowing stuff will be seeing real geography and biology in 3D.. you get the full resolution and fluid motion because it doesn't depend on some artist getting everything perfect, for 2 fields. They have a hard enough time making their CG mind blowing in 2D.

That said though, the scenes with earth done in CG in both How Earth Made US and Wonders of the Solar System are damned well done.. more of that, in 3D in 1440p or 2160p and hopefully more people will finally spit on SDTVs and smash them. That would be nice.

Of course, for them to recycle them.. not just smash and burn them.. yeah.. happy earth day

And this is what I mean. Silly people who don't understand that putting Avatar, in 2D on your TV at home, no matter how swank (unless you own a 3D tv.. >.< how? and why so soon?), doesn't make it a pixel for pixel transfer.

The movie was shot at 4K. Consumers don't have 4K yet. BUT if they did, in the 40-60 inch range of general consumer HDTVs, then you'd get that window into another world effect.

Great except for the part where panel makers aren't killing themselves about releasing 4K TVs for consumers, instead they are putting out panels that can do 240-600 frames per second of refresh rate.

This is awesome only if there is something to watch that uses 240+ frames per second.. like Avatar the movie in 3D with 120 frames per eye.. which also isn't going to happen because the movie was shot at 24 frames per second

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_2009

making some of the higher action scenes.. trash.

There's no reason, except the extra production money it would require, that they couldn't release the movie on 3D BD with an artificially higher frame rate.. 60 frames per second say, allowing normal 120 hz FULL HD sets to show the movie in 3D for people who want to see it that way, without getting headaches from the stroboscopic action scenes.

I mean given the ludicrous amounts of money the movie made, and that they've had more than enough time to render any extra frames they might need for making all the CG stuff 60 frames per second in 3D.. that BD is going to sell like no bodies business no matter what. At 60 frames per second you'd have everyone drooling over it like they did for the original theatrical release.

Additionally it would make a must buy out of any 3D TV that could claim to present the movie at 60 frames per second (per eye) 3D without glasses. Many TVs already make the claim of no glasses 3D.. so having Avatar be on the top of anyone's must buy list just makes it that much more worth buying (those sets).

Meanwhile, as they haven't said anything about the 3D release to consumers other than it being later this year.. November.. it isn't likely it's be enhanced in any way.. it would just be nice for them to consider it and in so doing encourage other releases to support higher frame rates 60+, especially for 2D releases which applies to everyone and 3D where appropriate.

Considering something like An Education which is very visual, it would be overkill. And if it was variable, 24p in low motion but 60p in high action scenes, it might feel chopped up.
