Bought an hp mini 311... just because I was within 40 feet of futureshop and they are foolish enough to still extend me some credits
So
my impressions?
Very impressed
All I want the little bastard for is office, thinking about putting the office 2010 technical preview on it too so I can write my book and do classwork at home. That it runs win7 flawlessly, plays all multimedia files flawlessly, AND plays blurays flawlessly, I'm flat on the floor impressed.
@ flawless bluray playback.. I shat my pants
But I'm discouraged because Xbox 360, with supposed 150-250% percent the processor speed (triple core 3.0ghz processor), and a much more powerful GPU than nvidia's Ion platform... Why does the Ion platform, Intel Atom powered mini 311 seem more capable for multimedia?
HP, Dell, Acer, Samsung etc aren't about to directly compete for gaming market share with their netbooks, but in terms of COST, you'll get so much more out of a netbook versus a 360 it's stupid. They just want to compete for that bottom dollar and scrounge for repeat buyers who want to upgrade their minis and netbooks. Xbox 360 doesn't even offer competition for that since they aren't planning to replace it. With Xbox 360 it's 'what you buy is what you're stuck with till it dies'. And it will. Often.
Only 5 years old and Xbox is being outclassed by a portable computer platform. All they [minis and netbooks] are missing is surround sound and HD 3D games.... I'm not losing out since honestly there's fuck all worth playing.
There are more MOVIES to watch on blueray, which is cheaper than getting them online, and I can actually do my homework on the mini. Otherwise if I wasn't a student, I'd be able to write my book without firing up the blasted PC.
HP mini 311 vs Xbox 360 = HP mini 311 with flawless victory
Plus, what the little bastard lacks in its own screen resolution, it makes up for with HDMI.
Just need some 5.1 headphones with USB sound card. hmmm to find me a pair.

The reason I passed on the 360 was cause it's behind tech wise.
