Went to Portland last weekend for a 4-day, to visit old friends, and then up to see Mt. St. Helens. Of course I read the requisite Fugitives and Refugees in order to get the real Portland experience... 
My friend Sarah went to grad school there and she and her husband moved back a few years ago. My ex used to live there and he used to talk about Portland ALL the time! I would get sick of it-- "if you love it so much why don't you MARRY it!" 
But now I can see why he loved it...
Sarah is a "green" architect, and her husband Joe is a geophysicist. They have an amazing house up on a hillside, with spectacular views of Mt. St. Helens. Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood. They have the coolest things in their house, too. I wanted to move in. And now I want a new career, something more exciting. Green architecture is pretty cool, and geophysics, well to be a specialist in rocks and stars would be rad! Although currently Joe is making big bucks in some kind of satellite TV business...
Mt. St. Helens was sobering. Also got to see Multomah Falls, go all over downtown, buy some books at Powells, and drionk at many of the McMenamin's various pubs. An awesome weekend!
Anyway, back to reality. Off to work!
