Warning: This is one of those rant updates. I suggest skipping to the QOTD at the end and leaving a comment

Argh! My mom's desire to do a half-assed job on things is really annoying sometimes. I have a dog, Brandy.. a golden retreiver. He's always had really nasty gunky pussy ears for the past 6 years or so. We've kind of had treatment for it over the years, but nothing serious. Finally a couple weeks ago we take Brandy down to the University of Pennsylvania's medical center where they check him out. One ear is basically fine but the other is so bad that they couldnt even get a scope into the ear canal to see if there was anything left of the ear canal. They left us with a bunch of medications, including one treatment/clean process that has to be done twice a day. This process involves connecting a syring to a catheter, sliding the catheter several inches down the dogs ear, and injecting the medicine into his ear canal.

This is all well and good, but the problem is that were going away for three weeks. The dogs are being taken care of.. but sliding catheters down ear canals is another story entirely. My mom found someone who could do it once a day and left the medication with directions to "just add drops to the ears." Let's list the things that are wrong with this:

(1) In general, a good life rule is that if it's not worth doing right, it's not worth doing at all.

(2) Mejore tarde que nunca - it's better late than never. Brandy's had this problem for 6 years. He can wait a month until I get back and will do it properly.

(3) Antibiotic resistance - by using half of the prescribed amount of the antibiotic, all your likely to accomplish is to make the infection resistant to that antibiotic. Well done.

(4) In the ear, not ON the ear - the infection isnt on the surface, its deep down in the ear. By applying the medicine ON the ear, you've fucked the project up so badly that you might not even accomplish antibiotic resistance!

(5) Time and money - this has been a $600 project so far. I blew the better part of a day petting that dog to try to keep him calm as he was FREAKING out to and from the doggie hospital. I wouldnt have done it if I'd known I was wasting my time.

My mom has always been a concept person.. execution, not her thing. Just remember though - the devil's in the details.

Anyway, I'm off to York, PA for my friends wedding and the Maine and Vermont. I'll be around though, I can take my laptop and feed my addiction on this trip.

QOTD Now for the question of the day, because I've found I get more comments that way and I like comments. What kind of person are you? anal compulisve? conceptual? lazy? quirky? OCD? high-strung? mellow yellow? controlling? passive?

I too have gathered that leaving a question at the end of the journal entry provides readers with a good place to interject rather than making them read everything and digest it (what a pity!).

Now, as for what kind of person I am, I would say that I am an interesting duality of many forms. I am pathologically shy, but I love certain forms of attention. I usually look like a slob, but I have particular trademarks of OCD. I am physically very lazy, but mentally very motivated and driven. I don't get mad, but I get upset. And on and on.
