oh sg land, it has been ever so long since i last wrote.
i actually went on a grand month-long adventure to belize for archaeology field school. let me tell you, it's definitely not all indiana jones glamour - quite the opposite. our homebase was san ignacio in the cayo district and our dig site was cahal pech ("place of ticks"). every weekday we dug trenches in the plaza (our biggest was about 50 feet long and 8 feet deep) and then proceeded to sift through every bucket of earth looking for artifacts before backfilling the huge holes we had spent weeks making. we unearthed bags and bags of pottery sherds, lithics, shells, and dozens of figurine fragments. we visited other mayan sites in the area including a weekend trip to tikal in guatemala, which was absolutely incredible. scott & i also managed to celebrate our one year marker by snorkeling at the world's 2nd largest coral reef off the coast of san pedro, ambergris caye. there is so much more to share too... cave trips, eating scrambled eggs and refried beans every morning for breakfast and peanut butter + banana sandwiches everyday for field lunch, hikes through the jungle, being escorted by armed guards toting m16s to ward off banditos, drinking belikin stouts everyday after work and the hijinks that ensued (bed-shitters, screaming fits, sexcapades, offending englishmen), dancing to 80's flashbacks and bob marley everynight at coco pele's. ahhh good times...
