i don't know to start with the good or the bad first. the good always seems so comparatively lame.
and my allergies are kicking into high gear

erin neel's brother phillip was just killed in iraq. when erin's family got back from church on easter sunday, there were representatives from the army waiting to tell them what had happened.
i feel so sorry for her family.
how fucking horrible.
yes, we are all human, and yes, we all die, and yes, life is pretty pointless to begin with,
BUT
being killed for a imperialistic political agenda is just about as fucking lame as it gets.
i can't begin to imagine losing my brother or sister right now.
i also can't EVEN begin to imagine familes all over the world who are ripped apart by war - people who lose not just one, but two or ten or fifty or thousands of relatives and neighbors.

the bad #2:
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
last night i went to a rally for invisible children. a few years ago some kids from cali took a trip to uganda and ended up making a heartbreaking documentary about the lord's resistance army (LRA) using child soildiers to overthrow the government in uganda (not to mention that sudan and the janjaweed are right next door). the LRA comes into villages at night and literally steals the children from their beds. they take these kids (we're talking from like ages 6-14) into the bush and slaughter one to show the others what will happen if they attempt to escape. then they threaten these kids lives and force them to murder people. hundreds of thousands of people are displaced (add those numbers darfur) and countless people have been murdered.
here's a clip:
civil war in uganda
Q & A darfur
it makes my soul ache.
america just doesn't give a shit and we are breeding that indifference into our culture more every day.
why the fuck isn't this headline news all the time? i know the answer is because africa is seen as economically worthless. but that is TOTALLY fucked up. reason #2 is that these people are black. tell me racism doesn't exit anymore. bullshit. if this was happening in any predominantly white "developed" country, there would be a global uproar. on september 11 about 3,000 people died. in these areas of africa HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people have been slaughtered.
the us still in iraq though... "monitoring" civil obedience and trying to force birth to a democratic capitalist society where the people have always been predominantly tribal... and sending young men like erin's brother to death. it just doesn't make sense.
anyway, if you are in the austin area (or wherever) and want to make a difference, invisible children, a non-profit NGO, is hosting a cross-country event called "displace me" on april 28 asking people to sleep outside at a designated site for a night and imagine living in a refugee camp. their site has more info. you can also buy the dvd or bracelets made by refugees in order to help fund the building of schools in uganda.
