What are the policies like in the UK and Canada? Here in Germany it's like "You want to join the army?... Really?`... I mean... are you sure? It's not like people are going to have any respect for you... OK... well, sign here."

Actually up until a few weeks ago, basic training (something like 7 months) was mandatory for male adults in Germany (they could get out of it easily if they wrote a letter about how they refuse to bear arms). They just cancelled it. But no one gave a shit who you banged in your free time...
