Hmm... (rubs chin)

I think people in this country place far too little value on finding something you love and just doing it. People should be more inclined to do something they love and be content with the life it allows them to lead.

Hmm... (scratches head)

I guess I am just tired of going from job to job looking for something that no one but I can give to me.

So, I've just decided. I'm not going to do that anymore. It all just came to me, I asked myself what the coolest job I could ever think of getting paid to do would be and BAM, there it was, right in front of me all this time.

I think I have my Dad to thank for jogging the gears in my head loose. He said something I will never forget to me the other day over the phone. He had been talking to a friend of his whose house he was staying at up in Wisconsin. They walked through this guy's garage and my Dad saw a fire suit hanging in the corner, he knew he was a firefighter down in IL but inquired to the reason the suit was there. The guy responded by explaining how the local town isn't large enough to afford a full time fire department, so it is all volunteer based, and whenever his is there, he puts himself on call for them. Before I explain the next part, keep in mind that my Dad and this guy had come up to his other house in Wisconsin to golf all weekend. My Dad asked him if he got a call for a fire this weekend, would he go, and without a seconds hesitation and with almost a young boys excitement, the man said: "of course I would!" My Dad called me later that day and told me all about it, and then he said the thing I will never forget, he told me that for that one moment when the guy said "of course I would!" my Dad said the guy instantly reminded him of me, and that he never thought about it, but that he has noticed, and these are my Dad's word's, he had noticed a humanitarian streak in me, that I have had my whole life. He said, "You enjoy helping people Zack," and then he asked me if I had ever thought about being a firefighter. I told him that I actually had but I had never really followed up on it.

This is where the coolest job I could ever imagine getting paid to do thing comes in, when I asked my self that question, being a Smoke Jumper was the first thing that came to mind.

Smoke Jumpers are fire fighters who have special certifications and during wildfires, they are called into service. Basically they parachute out of a plane into the middle of a wildfire and fight it with every tool in their arsenal, they are the front line of defense and they are the guys who prevent Phoenix Arizona from burning to the ground every year.

So that is what I decided, just now when I was trying to figure out what to blog about.

I am going to become a firefighter and someday, a Smoke Jumper.

Well, that was a lot more than I planned for, my mind and my fingers are tired, wish me luck with my new life goals, and hey, maybe someday you'll meet me as I pull you out of a raging inferno. Maybe I will be the person who shows up to save you just when you had lost all hope, and guess what; it won't cost you a thing.

So the next time you find yourself in a midlife, or early life, or any kind of crisis, just think real hard about the thing you would want most in that situation, and make it happen.
