I have returned...
So, after over a month of using Tara's computer, I got all the parts together to rebuild mine this weekend. Nurodancer gave me a few tips and helped me out a good bit, thankfully. All of the grunt work was mine alone, and I think I do it again in a pinch, or if I just get the time and money to upgrade again. I salvaged some RAM and a hard drive from Tara's old computer, and I bought a new CPU and power supply while I was getting the new motherboard. I'm not anywhere close to state of the art, but I'm at least better off than I was. For those who have heard my computer in action, although I bought a low noise fan, it's still just as loud. I wonder if there's something about the case that amplifies noise.
All of my data was ok, and I managed to get the most important stuff to Tara's computer on a half-assed windows install. This morning I reformatted the drives and did a full install. The rest of the day was spent on upgrades and re-installing programs. I'm back to 99% functionality. For some reason I can't get Thunderbird to check my mail, but I've decided to work on it tomorrow. I still need to re-install some games, but I can do just about everything I need to do in my normal use of the computer.
I'm tired now, so I'm going to bed. Excelsior, true believers!
