Today I start what we at UBC call "Easter Long Weekend." The long and short of it is that we get Friday and Monday off, but since I don't have classes on either Thursday or Tuesday, and my afternoon seminar was canceled due to the APA (which I had to skip out on for monetary reasons), I don't have to return for class until next Wednesday. For those of you at UNO or other schools with a Spring Break, we had a "reading week" back in February which basically substitutes for.
The presentation I had to give in my Philosophy of Mind class went pretty well. The prof and I sort of traded the floor as he decided to pitch in his lecture on the material as I presented mine. Next term, I hope to talk the prof of my TA class into letting me give a few lectures. I really like teaching.
I met with my potential thesis advisor today, and we talked about the best way to approach the topic. When I started graduate work, I thought I was going to be able to give a metaphysical or ontological account which would line up quantum mechanics and the macrophysical. Now, I'm scaling it back so that my Master's thesis will likely aim more at the issues of giving such an account, is it possible, what might it look like, and what is the role of philosophy in all of this mess. In support of this, I'm going to try to audit a course on modern physics over the summer (because I don't have nearly enough work to do now {sarcasm}). I still don't have a committed thesis advisor, but over the break I'm going to work on my term paper for the Causation seminar, focus on the same subject, and submit a draft to the professor (who is identical to my potential thesis advisor), and we'll talk more about the topic then.
I'm going to document my proposed schedule of activities for the next few days, so that I have it written down somewhere.
Wednesday afternooon- relax, maybe read some QM articles
Thursday- relax
Friday- Causation paper/article reading, marking midterms for my TA class
Saturday- Bio/modernity paper/article reading, marking midterms
Sunday- Causation paper again, possibly leftover marking, maybe go clubbing
Monday- Bio/mod paper again
Tuesday- last free day before the week resumes, email drafts of both papers to respective professors for feedback
Ok, let the games begin.
