I spent all day Saturday walking around Silver Lake, Thai Town and Hollywood. It may sound weird but I actually felt like I fit in. I live in Beverly Wood, the area between Culver city and Beverly Hills. I feel like a turd in a punch bowl here, not identifying with the people I interact with. They are nice people but its kind of suburbia like.
I am not a so called hipster. In fact I am the most un hip person on the planet, a socialy awkward dork if you must. I have always been a little left of, left, of center.
Walking through the neighbourhoods reminded me of Clarksville in Austin. Clarksville was a slave colony to the west of the capitol building. Once the descendants of the slaves started to leave in the 70's low income Hippies moved in and improved the place with sweat equity AKA gentrification. The history wasn't wiped out but utilized.
Clarksville was the site of the original Whole Foods on Lamar st. Everyone in Whole foods was stoned, not just stoned, ripped. Customers, volinteers, everybody. Yes it was a coop, They had the best jukebox. People would walk in circles wandering the isles jamming to Bob Marley and the Clash. Seems they couldn't remember what they went for. wink
The melancholy I felt walking around was strange. I enjoyed the walk, talking to people, having a few beers at a sidewalk cafe, but it also evoked a sadness. I don't know why . Maybe it brought home the loneliness I feel.
