Hmm. I haven't done anything all that interesting lately, but I did go to a cool show last week. It was Coheed and Cambria, Blood Brothers, dredg and Mewithoutyou. I mainly went to see dredg, although I was a bit interested in seeing Coheed.

Almost didn't make it to the show, though, because of Des Moines' fucked up roads. I took a wrong turn while I wasn't paying attention (my air conditioning up and died on me, so that's my excuse), and it turned into a massive clusterfuck. I took the first road back in DSM that I could find, and followed it west until the road I needed to take south. Well, wonder of wonders, Hubbel/Grand in DSM runs just slightly south through town, so I was already south of where I needed to be, but thinking I was still north. You can guess what happened then. My path then includes leaving Des Moines entirely, ending up on a road that inexplicably stops in the middle of nowhere, cutting through a state park, going way west of town, finally getting back on an interstate and taking the safest route back to where I was going. I was gonna be early, too.

I missed most of Mewithoutyou, but I'd never heard of them, and what I heard I don't think I really missed much. Then dredg played. Good god, they're fantastic. Their guitarist strums like a monster, their drummer was tight as hell and their singer, Gavin, sings some hard vocal lines but nails them with ease. They all look really young, too, which amazes me when you consider the musical depth of the things they write. Anyway, they only played for a half hour, and it was up much too quickly.

Next up was Blood Brothers, which was a little over a half hour of the most shrill, eardrum-rending caterwauling I've ever heard exit a human voice without the owner of said human voice being murdered. Not that great.

Coheed was a respectable show, and I knew some of their stuff, but I'm not much of a fan yet. Although it's funny that their lead singer is this large, swarthy-skinned gent with an amazing and clear falsetto, but his real voice is somewhat low, and he was mumbling everything he said when he wasn't singing. He's also got some guitar skills, but may not have the implementation down yet. He can play fast and well, but a lot of the riffs don't sync very well with each other. Anyway, yeah, glad I got to see them, at least.

I bought a dredg t-shirt, too. I have way too many black band t-shirts already, but it was too weird to pass up. It's got an angel with no face or eyes being hugged by a devil, also with no face or eyes, and at their legs/feet they're joined together into a sphere with a belly button (maybe) with a leaf growing out of it. I don't get it, either. But it's fun to watch people stare at it. Kinda sums up the band, too, as most of the time I have no idea what they're singing about, but they do it so well. smile
