A friend is someone who is willing to be there with you when you're going through a difficult time, even when you try to push them away, they persist. They aren't afraid to control you when you mess up, but more than simply telling you you're fucking up but providing a way out, and once again being persistent and after its too late simply saying "I told you so".
I wish I could find someone in real life like that. I have a single friend who I can say truly is all of these things but he lives on the other side of the country, we've never actually met, and only talk through IRC as pathetic as that is. Yet I consider him a genuine friend who does in fact care for my well being. When I'm talking about doing something stupid he lets me know it is messed up. When I'm considering something extremely stupid he threatens to tip the feds (and he's dead serious).
By the standards of what I believe a real friend is, I'm no friend to anyone at all. I'm definitely do want to grow and be that friend to people and those which I hold dear.
