In Ohio there is a smoking ban (voted on in Nov) that has left a lot of people on differnt sides of this not happy.
Smokers are not happy since they are not allowed to smoke in establishments.
Some non-smokers are upset because they think the law is too tough -- and are confused because there were two laws to be voted on reguarding smoking-- and they were trying to vote for the other one.
***whether or not you approve smoking, there is an underlying issue: rights.
Yes- smoking is bad for you
BUT... so is driving a car/ getting out of bed/drinking/ eating/ and a whole lot of other things as well.
Granted, there should be a better way for establishments to deal with smoking - however to ban all those that smoke - it is the start of a nasty hole that begins with telling people "its for your own good"
We can all look at cars now and create a law that makes it so that as of tomorrow, no cars are allowed due to the carbon monoxide that is given off from them.
We could create a law banning all greasy and all foods with trans fats in them.
We could ban going outside for fear that the ultraviolet exposure is not good for people and can cause glaucoma/ melanoma/ etc...
All of this "for your own good"
We could ban living because "it is for your own good".
I saw a car a few days ago that had one of the signs banning smoking hanging in the back window with the words "Hitler would be proud!" written above it. Two men went past it and said "I guess Hitler didn't like smoking."
From what I have heard, there is a lawsuit about the smoking ban going on. And another thing I heard is that there is a possibility of a secondary vote in April.
Frankly I hope the smoking ban gets overturned. I would also hope that in this light maybe those establishments create ways to accomodate those who wish to smoke as well as those who do not- as well as those that work there as well.
There is a solution -- if only establishments were willing to put forth the effort.
First it was smoking... then it was greasy food... then it was living....
you can use the guise of "its for your own good" and maybe some nieve people will follow. Sadly they follow up to the point where their own rights are being infringed upon and then they ask for help from those who were persecuted-- and find out that all those persecuted are gone and they are left to stand alone to try and fend off what is "for your own good".
And if you are wondering... I quit smoking in 2003 and haven't gone back to it. So this isn't coming from a disgruntled smoker in case you were wondering.
