This is a repost from my IAM page: maybe someone can give me suggestions for it:
2006/07/03 12:43 Hi readers!
I have a BIG favor to ask -- first I will explain.
a HUGE pet peeve of mine is getting calls that show up on my caller ID as "Blocked" or "Private Call". Then you answer it, and it either:
1* People calling for Walmart (my number is close to the new Walmart's Auto section.)
2* An automated system tellimg me to call a 1800 number (funny thing: the name of the places that call that way are things I have never heard of)
Of 100 calls, *maybe* one call might be someone I know calling for me. I know that sounds like a strange statistic, but it is genuinely true (those who know me - know that I use my cell phone for calls because of the issues with my home phone. And they know that I only use my home phone for two things:
1* to use my calling card to call my mom or little brother in PA
2* to be online, since I use a dialup internet service.
Now, I have tried to talk to the phone company MANY, MANY times with no solution. I ask them if there is a way for me to block all calls that do not identify themselves on the caller ID, and they tell me that they cannot.
I do not want to call the phone company again(which happens to be AT&T), since for some God unknown reason they feel that since they have merged with SBC I have to sign up with the merged company. ( which frankly makes no sense: why do I need to do anything: they made the mess by merging -- they clean it up -- but anyways)
The merged compaqny is AT&T and SBC combined: I have had horrible service from SBC (I got rid of them when they 1* screwed up my account balance and 2* kept making excuses for my phone line acting up. AT&T finally resolved most of the issue with the phone line -- no thanks to having to do correspondences with SBC back and forth until AT&T decided to take matters into their own hands and rewire the connection from the box to my apartment)
ANYWAYS, does anyone know of a device that I could connect to my phone that will recognize that there is a "private" or "blocked" call -just like a caller ID box -- but answers it with a message stating that blocked or private calls are not received at this phone number
IF ANYONE HAS IDEAS ON THIS -- PLEASE LET ME KNOW: I'D APPRECIATE IT
Thanks a Bunch!!!

And if you are wondering, one of the reasons I am overly paranoid about knowing who is calling me, is because in Pennslyvania I was stalked by a woman- and she kept calling my mom's place asking for me -and when I'd answer, she'd hang up. I have been in constant worry that something like that will happen again in my life and for that reason (amongst others) I make every possible attempt to know who is calling me.
